Practical Tips for Wellness
As a student or a lawyer, the stresses of work, school and life altogether may feel overwhelming at times. We may be overcome with worry and anxiety that paralyzes us in the very areas we want to move forward.
Wellness is the overall balance of well-being in your mental, physical and soul (unless you don’t believe in that). Here are five practical tips to achieving a better balance in life:
1. Declutter – Clutter can subconsciously reflect our mental state and contribute to anxiety without us even noticing. Creating organization in your physical environment can help you focus on mental clarity, instead of the mess on your desk.
2. Have an exercise routine – Whether it’s that yoga class you signed up for your new years resolution, or a daily commute which incorporates more walking into your routine, physically exercise is essential for your health and releases endorphins, which trigger a positive feeling in your body.
3. Find a hobby – I personally find it helpful to find a hobby that works a different part of your brain than your daily workflow. I lean towards hobbies that are more hands-on given that the law requires extensive focus and mental energy. Something like cooking or drawing can help you think creatively and exercise thinking processes not part of your day-to-day work.
4. Meditation – There are a ton of meditation apps out there to help you focus on calmness. Meditation through breathing exercises and question prompts can be helpful in calming rushing thoughts. Depending on your beliefs, meditation can also take the form of prayer.
5. Self-reflection – Perhaps one of the most important steps is recognizing what is the source of your anxiety. Are certain relationships causing you stress? Or is it an unmanageable workload? Identify which areas of your life are the stressors and write them down. Think about incremental changes you can make to address the situation.
While there are many more strategies to address anxiety, these practical changes are just some potential solutions to creating greater balance in your life.
