Interviews and OCIs | It's Yours to Lose

For those entering the first round of the on-campus interview (OCI) process, it is easy to get swept up by questions like “How many applicants are there?”, “How many students will be hired this year?”, “What if they find out about my poor mark in _?”.

Time after time, we see students psych themselves out before the big day.

The truth is that this is yours to lose.

By getting an on-campus interview with a firm, you’ve already made it past the screening round and you have been selected for a reason. Maybe it was your academic marks. Maybe it was something interesting about your resume. Maybe it was a referral.

It doesn’t matter.

You are now on an equal playing field with all of the other students who are going through OCIs. Everyone is back at the start line again.

Now isn’t that comforting?

50% of the students who go through this process will have psyched themselves out and end up disqualifying themselves within the first few minutes. 25% of the students will not have done the necessary prep work, training and coaching to properly showcase who they are. And that leaves you and the remaining 25% who will proceed to the next stage.

It’s yours to lose.
